Owner’s Guide

Having owned and run a Gilera DNA for longer than most people, I thought I’d try and put some pearls of wisdom down on the site.

Problem Solution
It needs servicing every 2000 miles Ideally you need an Authorised Gilera Dealer who doesn’t deal in large capacity motorcycles. Regular motorcycle dealers people tend to sneer at the DNA.
The Drivebelt I have mine changed every 4000 to 5000 miles and they’re pricey at about £25-30. If it wears out the bike will stall at idling speeds.
The Fuel Pump If this fails, the bike will loose power at speed. It’s not too expensive to fix though.
Worn Bushes These seem to wear out at 10,000 miles. When riding the rear end of the bike feels unstable like riding on ice. Cost me about £90 to fix.
Bike won’t start Usually it’s the inhibitor switches on the handlebars. Hopefully one of the brake levers will work allowing the bike to be taken for repair.
Helmet bay difficult to lock First bike had this, second one didn’t. It is an issue with the model. No cure.
Corrosion Duurrr… Keep the bike as dry as possible. Can’t be overstated. Buy a cover. Downpipe always rusts.
Tyres The Pirellis are the best for dry road use but tend to need replacing as they split. I have Michelin Gold Standard now which are better in the wet and longer wearing.

I’ll add to this list if there are suggestions or I think of anything else.

  2. Hi,
trying to trace an electrical fault on my son’s DNA 125, could you please advise me where the rectifier is to be found?

    many thanks

    Robin

  3. Regarding the rectifier, I presume it’s next to the battery. The illustration on GileraSpares.co.uk isn’t exactly helpful. They have a nice picture of it though, they call it a voltage regulator.

  4. hi,

P.S could any one send me a pic of how the pipes connect to the carb as i removed it and have no idea which pipes go where. my email address is dannyscott1991@hotmail.co.uk

  5. hi :) ive had my dna 125 for a few months now and today it wouldnt start.

it was a few hours after i had got home from work , after riding in pretty bad rain.
i thought it might be down to damp electrics somewhere but then ive riden in the rain quite alot later “sighs”

anyway , when i went to start it the bike sounded awful, then it started but for a few seconds but didnt sound quite right, after that the bike hasnt started , starter motor makes a click but thats all.

after a few trys the bike seemed to turn its self off and then back on and i noticed the trip counter and clock had reset.

any ideas? and if so what might need drying out?

    ta for any help
    jon

    • No idea really. I’ve driven my DNA through appalling weather and it splutters a bit for a while and is then fine. I’d say it’s worth trying to dry the whole bike out for a week and then look again.

      • its ok .. my engine is blown grrr

      • ok it wasnt the engine .. my alternater shattered into tiny bits .. the crank has no play apart from a tiny bit of in/out movement ( is that ok?).

on the cover for this side i have a large inspection type hole at the bottom of the cover . should this have a rubber plug in it?
